On this week´s post we want to introduce Claudia and her family, one our talented partner weavers whose dedication and commitment inspires us every day.
As a short introduction for those new here, at Awanay we work with talented weavers, hand-spinners and small wool producers who live in very inaccessible places in northern Argentina. Our mission is to help them have a sustainable and fair income doing what they know best, and according to their traditions.
Claudia lives in a rural area called the Dry Forest, in the province of Santiago del Estero and produces from her home along with her family, (husband and eldest sons) around 600 sq mt of rugs per year.
How would you describe a typical day at your house?
– Most of the time we´re together with the family. Each one of us doing a certain task, hand dyeing, weaving, preparing the wool… between tasks, we share “mates” [a local drink], jokes… we like talking to each other just to relax a little bit!
Making a rug consists of many steps, what tasks are you in charge of?
– My specialty is hand-dyeing. I have to make all the calculations in order to obtain the desired color, I have to consider the amount of wool to dye and so the amount of pigments I would need. I also make the calculations when setting up the loom, like how long the warp has to be. And, I´m also responsible for the final details of the rug!
What aspects of your work you find most challenging? And which ones give you greater satisfaction?
– The most challenging thing to me is to obtain the right color, it has to match the sample chosen by the client. Many times I have to repeat the process all over again since for some reason, maybe that each wool is different, the result is not the same.
At the same time, what I enjoy the most is playing with colors! The procedure of getting to a specific tone awakens a deep learning process inside me and it helps me grow in wisdom.
What things have you achieved thanks to your work?
I can say I can make a living out of what I love to do and it has also improved the quality of life for the whole family. Also, through our work we get to help the rest of the community as well.
Please tell us a little bit more about this impact on the rest of the community
-Through our work we create more work for our neighbors. For example, we are developing teams of hand-spinners. They select the raw wool in order to obtain top quality threads and then they hand-spin it. We also match the new ones, generally very young, with more experienced ones so this ancient tradition passes through the generations. We´re so happy since we can feel their enthusiasm and excitement. We feel we are an open door to reach families [who otherwise have little access to jobs whatsoever, living in the middle of the Dry Forest] with a weekly income. Most of them have traditionally been women but now men are also becoming part of the group, husbands and their older sons.
What are your dreams for the future?
I wish this would continue to grow, even more for the future of my children and the children of all the families who are part of this productive chain.

En el post de esta semana queremos presentar a Claudia y su familia, parte de nuestro equipo de tejedores cuya dedicación y compromiso nos inspiran día a día.
Como breve introducción para los que son nuevos por acá, en Awanay trabajamos con tejedores, hilanderos y pequeños productores de lana que viven en zonas muy inaccesibles en el norte de Argentina. Nuestra misión es ayudarlos a que puedan vivir sustentablemente de lo que mejor saben hacer, acorde a sus tradiciones, y recibiendo un precio justo.
Claudia vive en el Monte Santiagueño y produce junto a su familia (marido e hijos mayores) más de 600 m2 de alfombras por año, todas totalmente hechas a mano.
¿Cómo describirías un día típico en tu casa?
– La mayor parte del tiempo estamos juntos en familia, cada uno en su respectiva actividad… con teñidos, ovillados, armando urdimbres y tejiendo. Entre eso corre el diálogo, los chistes y algunos mates para aplacar el cansancio o relajar un instante
Hacer una alfombra conlleva varios pasos, ¿de qué te encargas vos principalmente?
-Mi trabajo especialmente es hacer los teñidos a mano sacando cálculos de qué cantidad de lanas teñir para cada color y también sacar medidas para hacer las urdimbres de cada alfombra. También hago costuras y terminaciones finales!
¿Qué aspectos de tu trabajo te resultan más desafiantes? ¿Y cuáles te dan mayor satisfacción?
-Mi desafío principal es llegar al colora partir de la muestra que eligió el cliente. En algunas ocasiones tengo que repetir el proceso de teñido porque no agarró bien el color… por algún motivo, quizás la lana es diferente, el resultado no es el mismo. Al mismo tiempo, lo que disfruto más es jugar con los colores buscando la tonalidad. En cada proceso o práctica va despertando en mí un aprendizaje y me hace crecer en sabiduría.
¿Qué cosas lograron gracias a su trabajo?
-Este trabajo nos permitió hacer lo que nos gusta como actividad económica. También mejoró la calidad de vida para mi familia y se creó una fuente de trabajo para muchas familias más.
Por favor contanos un poquito más sobre el impacto en el resto de la comunidad
-A través de nuestro trabajo creamos más trabajo para nuestros vecinos. Por ejemplo, estamos armando un equipo de hilanderas. Ellas seleccionan la lana virgen de mayor calidad y luego la hilan a mano. Amadrinamos a las más jóvenes para que el conocimiento y el compromiso pase a través de las generaciones. Nos hace muy felices sentir su entusiasmo y compromiso. Sentimos que somos una puerta abierta para llegar a cada hogar con algún ingreso de dinero semanalmente. Ahora los hombres se están sumando tambien! Esposos e hijos mayores.
¿Cuáles son tus sueños para el futuro?
-Que esto siga creciendo aun más para el futuro de nuestros hijos y de los hijos de las familias que son parte de la cadena productiva del emprendimiento.
